A page about barn owls has the heading "Busy at Night." Barn owls often rest in the day. At night, they fly and look for food.

You may read, "Barn owls are nocturnal." What does nocturnal mean? The next line gives a clue. These owls are active mostly at night. Active means awake and doing things.

At dusk, the sky starts to get dark. A barn owl may leave its resting place then. Dusk is the time when day turns into night.

But how can an owl find food in dim light? Dim means not bright. A barn owl can hear very soft sounds. It can listen for a mouse moving in the grass.

When it is time to rest, the owl finds a roost. A roost is a place where a bird rests. It may be inside a quiet barn.

A photo on the page shows a resting owl. Its caption says, "Resting by day." That fits the owl's mostly nighttime life.
